Staying active and healthy during the vibrant summer months is a priority for me. Beyond the usual advice—eating well, drinking water, exercising, and getting enough sleep—I’ve developed five additional habits that make a real difference in maintaining my fitness.
1. Incorporating Daily Walks
Walking is a fantastic and often underrated form of exercise, and I make it a daily habit.
Adding a daily walk can help burn an extra 200 calories without triggering food cravings like intense cardio might. It’s also gentle on the joints and a great way to spend time with family, friends, or pets. Whether I’m pushing a stroller or strolling through the park, walking keeps me moving in an enjoyable way.
2. Engaging in Playful Activities
Summer is the perfect time to get outside and play!
Activities like throwing a ball, playing tag, dancing, or jumping on a trampoline keep fitness fun and effective. These playful movements increase Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), which helps burn calories and improve cardiovascular health. Short, fun bursts of activity throughout the day can enhance fitness without feeling like exercise.
3. Keeping Workout Clothes Ready
Having workout clothes easily accessible makes exercising more effortless.
I keep stylish, comfortable fitness wear ready to go, eliminating barriers to physical activity. Whether running errands or planning a workout, wearing my fitness gear encourages me to move more and squeeze in quick workouts throughout the day.
4. Smart Grocery Shopping
What I eat plays a crucial role in my fitness.
To stay on track, I avoid buying sugary snacks and opt for dark chocolate, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Ordering groceries online also helps prevent impulse purchases. Having healthy snacks readily available makes it easier to maintain nutritious eating habits.
5. Balanced Comfort Food Choices
Rather than avoiding comfort foods entirely, I keep certain “junk” foods in my freezer—like vegan meat substitutes and ready-made Asian dishes.
These aren’t everyday meals, but having them available prevents impulsive fast food runs. When I indulge, I balance my plate by filling at least a third with vegetables, keeping my meals nutritious while satisfying cravings.
These five habits have helped me stay fit and enjoy summer to the fullest. Fitness isn’t just about big gestures—it’s about small, consistent choices. So, take that extra walk, play a little more, and make mindful food decisions—your body will thank you!
